In January 2012, the City Lit teaching artists entered Mr. Fehlauer's intermediate special education classroom and helped his students put on a performace of the Dr. Seuss classic, "The Lorax."
The program goals, developed with Mr. Fehlauer, were as follows:
- Help the students develop a cognitive understanding of the text, "The Lorax," and the conservation issues it addresses.
- Help the students understand that they can utilize play, art, and imagination to connect to learning.
- Have the students develop an understanding of the infused artistry in themselves.
- Create an original interpretation and performance of "The Lorax"
The teaching artists taught the students theater games for warm-up each day, warming up "our voices and our bodies," helped them design their costumes for performance, and helped them rehearse for a guided dramatic play version of the book. The culmination was a successful collaborative performance by the class and teaching artists.
